New Year - New Product

heat pack without wool flannel sleeve
heat pack with removable wool flannel sleeve

Tomorrow the new year begins and our newsletter goes out introducing our newest product. There will be more details in the newsletter, but for you blog readers, you get an early peek.

Our newest inventory item is a heat pack.
It is about 16" long and 4" wide with a handle on each end. The covering is cotton, but we've added a removable wool flannel sleeve to help keep the warmth in the pack and give it a softer feel. It can used either way - with or without the wool flannel sleeve. Just put it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and it's ready to use.

As an added bonus, these packs can also be used as a cold compress - just put it in the freezer or refrigerator rather than the microwave.

We offer it as shown or as a kit.
Price: $25
as a kit: $12
If you don't see it on our website yet, just contact us and we'll get one to you.

Twelfth and Final Day

This is the 12th and last day of our "Deal of the Day" event. Today we are closing out with our Appleton Club. Sign up for our Appleton Crewel Club, in which you get all the 421 colors over the course of a year, and get the last month free. In the Appleton Club you already get a 20% discount over the regular price and that includes free shipping to US and Canadian addresses. With this Deal of the Day you get another 8.5% discount by getting the last month free.
If you use Appleton crewel, this is the deal for you. We've been running the club for almost 5 years now and will keep it going for years to come. There is also an option to get all the colors at once, which gives you $100 off the total price of buying the skeins individually and again there is free shipping. If you want that option, today only, we'll also give you an additional 10% off as our alternate Deal of the Day. Check our website for more details, but the promotion is not there, you must mention it to get it.

In closing out our Deal of the Day promotion, I want to thank all of you who participated and due to the response we've had, we're planning on doing it again next year.

Crewel Ornaments

Here's a new idea for something you can do with the Wool and Hoop kits we carry. The finished designs are about 3" x 3" - just the perfect size for an ornament. Any of the designs can be made into an ornament. Here's just one.
There are several more designs from which to choose and lots more creative ideas for other projects in Wool and Hoop's The New Crewel book by Katherine Shaughnessy

Felted Wool Dryer Balls

This is another of our newest 'finds'. Felt wool dryer balls are a replacement for commercial dryer sheets and/or fabric softeners. They are a great all natural alternative to these two additivies. They reduce static, lessen drying time, and fluff your clothing. Simply toss them into your dryer with your damp laundry and turn it on.

We have them in kit form so you can make them yourself or in 'ready to go' packs. Both options are on our website. Just so you know........... I make them myself right here at The Wooly Thread.

They can also be embellished with embroidery or needle felting. They are about the size of a tennis ball.

Transfer-eze

We recently discovered the best product for transfering designs to your sewing/embroidery project. It works on heavy wool fabrics and dark colored fabrics. It's always been tough transfering designs, but this really works great. What I like best is that you can run this paper right through you printer, so anything on your computer can be printed right on to the transfer paper and then placed on your project. You then sew/embroider right through the paper. When finished soak it in color water and the paper 'melts' away. We've only had this a short time, and already had to re-order. Our packet of 10 sheets (8" x 11") is $15.

Felted Wool Ornaments

Here are a couple of felted wool ornaments I recently made. The smaller ones are wet felted wool dipped in a food coloring and water solution. This a great projects to do with children since no needles are used.

The larger ornament is also wet felted but then some our wool felt and Appleton crewel wool has been needle felted to the wet felted ball. The decorative possibilities are endless.

Country Bumpkin Magazines Updates

Country Bumpkin just sent out their newsletter stating:
"Just a reminder that the magazines are no longer available from newstands."
That means you must get a subscription in order to get the magazine.
We offer subscriptions and also a 'drop ship' option, which means you sign up to get the magazines sent to you as they are released. You pay only for one magazine at a time and only when it is released.
They also note in their newsletter that they haven't sent out Inspirations 68 to their subscribers yet. If you normally like to pick up your magazine at a retailer, that option is now gone according to what they've posted, so don't be disappointed - sign up to get yours. You can do that on our website or via email.
Here's a link to the Country Bumpkin webletter for more details:

Fun Project - Wool Ball Ornaments

We recently found another way to use the very versatile wool roving. Not only can it be needle felted into a myriad at shapes, but it can also we wet felted. I'm including a couple of links to felting projects you might find of interest. The first is a link to the instructions on how to make these needle felted ornaments shown above.
by Joann's Fabrics:
http://www.joann.com/static/project/0910/P370751_needle_felted_ornaments.pdf

The other project is for wet felting balls. These wet felted balls can be used as toys, beads, ornaments or even dryer balls. This can be a fun project to do with children, too, since the wet felting process does not use any needles.
This link is courtesy of Martha Stewart:
http://www.marthastewart.com/article/felt-balls
*******************
Note: I've used both these techniques and my personal favorite is to wet felt the initial ball and then needle felt a design on the ball using a different color roving, some wool felt and/or some wool yarn.
One ounce of our wool roving makes one wet felted ball about the size of a tennis ball. An ounce can also make 8-10 smaller wet felted balls measuring approximately 1+ inch in diameter.
We'll have more information and other new projects using wet felting in our December newsletter.

Needle Felting

Some of you may remember that we once did a lot with needlefelting. We carried the supplies and some kits. We are no longer stocking needle felting supplies, but we did find this delightful site with instructions on how to needle felt. It includes a u-tube presentation on the process.
If you are intested in needle felting, be sure to check this out.

This is a picture of the needle felted dog shown on the website. This pooch is enough to get me thinking about needle felting again.

We no longer stock all the supplies, but do have some natural (off-white) roving.
Here's the link to the article and u-tube instructional link if you are interested:

One Only!

You may know that for the past couple of weeks, the AZ of Embroidery Stitches 2 books have been flying out of here. We've re-ordered stocks of this book several times, just to fill the orders that have come in after Mary Corbet's review. One of the books that was sent out arrived with some slightly bent corners, so the recipient returned it to us. Now, we have one of these highly sought after books with slightly bent corners. I can't sell it as new, so I'm offering this one copy for just $10 and free media mail shipping to the first person who contacts me. Again, there is just one copy at this great price. I think you'll be surprised at how little damage there actually there is. If you want this book, this is your opportunity! I'll post as soon as it is gone.
