New Wool Rocks

We just got our newest shipment of wool rocks and some pictures and information about the women in South Africa who make them.

These women are members of the Xhosa tribe and live in Cape Town, Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape. They are part of a job creation program that gives them as artisans the confidence and means to support themselves and their family in otherwise economically depresssed areas. They earn a fair wage and learn new skills. This benefits not only the individual women, but also their communities. The company that imports these rocks for us has a mission to bring socially and enviornmentally friendly products to its customers and, at the same time, to help suppport community development around the world.

We stock the smaller rocks/pebbles, but can special order rocks as large as 36 inches in diameter.

Ottobre Pricing

This is just a 'heads up' that the Ottobre prices will be increasing significantly in the next few days.
The reasons........
The ever flucuating exchange rate has increased by about 5% - 8% this month.
Also Ottobre announced a price increase effective January 1st not only for the magazines but for the postage, too.

If you want a magazine, a subscription, or a renewal to an existing subscription, right now is the time. Prices on our website will reflect the change shortly.

Ten Years on Ebay

Today, December 6th, marks exactly 10 years since we first signed up on ebay. Back then it was in its infancy and sold mostly beeny babies - remember those? We sold one of Mark's beeny babies for over $300 and we were hooked. Now, thousands of transactions later, we have more than 100 items listed in our ebay store at any given time. It is a huge part of our business and attracts customers from all over the world.
If you haven't visited our ebay store.....check it out:

Wool Rocks - Boulders

We stock some wool rocks as part of our regular inventory. These 'rocks' are hand made in South Africa as part of a job creation program for women there. They are needle felted wool made to look like real rocks. They come in variety of colors and sizes. We stock the smaller ones which range from 2" to about 13" in diameter. They are shown and described on our regular website - www.woolythread.com.
However, recently a woman contacted me about wanting to purchase some of our wool rocks, but she wanted them to be really big - boulder size. She is using them for display, as well as, for extra seating and as ottomans. We got them for her and she graciously sent me pictures of them in her home, so I could share them with you.

Woolbur

Look what we just found for kids - and kids at heart.

This is delightful new book for young children. It is a hard cover book with book jacket published in 2008. It is written by Leslie Helakoski and illustrated by Lee Harper.
It tells the story of Woolbur the little sheep who likes to do things his own way - like carding his own wool, playing on the spinning wheel, and not following the flock. Woolbur's escapades entertain, as well as, educate as they take the reader through the steps involved in processing wool. It is about 30 pages and each one is full of beautiful illustrations to delight any child - or adult.
Price: $16.00

One More Ribbon Color

We have added yet another color to our ribbon inventory. It is called 'Coffee Bean'. It is a dark brown and is ready to ship out right now along with the other 7 colors - shown below.

Ottobre Price Increases Coming

We just got word from Ottobre that the prices will go up approximately 6% on the first day of the new year. As the time gets closer, we'll post exact prices in US dollars. Of course, as always, the exchange rate will impact what the actual dollar amount will be on January 1, 2009.
We've had record sales these past few weeks, due primarily to being able to offer the lowest prices we've had in more than 2 years. If you've been thinking about getting a subscription or renewing a current subscription, now would be a good time - before the prices increase.

New Ribbon Colors

After numerous requests, we have finally added several new colors to our selection of this exquisite satin ribbon from Switzerland. It is 4 inches wide and double-sided. It is ideal for binding your blankets. You won't find a finer blanket binding anywhere.

The colors are from left to right:
butter cream, orchid, light pink, apple green, ivory, light blue, and beige.

They should all be available on our website shortly or you can contact us directly.

Price Reductions Once Again

I'm thrilled to once again announce that the prices for Ottobre Design magazine have been lowered again due entirely to the increase in the value of the US Dollar to the Euro. How great, too, that this this price decrease comes the same week as the newest issue (children's winter issue) is released. For more info on the new issue, scroll down to the October 8th post.

Here are the new prices for Ottobre subscriptions. They aren't on our regular website yet, but just mention our blog price announcement and you'll get the lower price.
6 issue subscription (women's and kids' magazines) - $65
4 issue subscription (kids only) - $50
2 issue subscription (women only) - $20

These are the lowest prices we've been able to offer in more than 2 years. Note: you can renew even if you are not yet due to renew.

These prices are valid until the exchanges rate changes - whether it be up or down.

Great News - Lower Prices!!

It's been about 4 years since we started as the representative for Ottobre Design magazine. Ever since then the dollar has been dropping in value against the Euro, which means we have had to raise our prices several times to keep on a par with the actual price of the magazines. We always try to keep our US dollar prices equal to the Euro price. That means we have to watch the exchange rate and make our adjustments as they come along. For the past 4 years that has meant several price hikes and not one price reduction. The exchange rate was so poor last month, we didn't even make the adjustment up, hoping the rate would soon drop back down. Well, it has not only dropped enough for us not to have to institute another hike, but it has dropped enough so we can actually LOWER the prices of the magazines and subscriptions. A subscription for all 6 issues (women's and children's) has now dropped from $79 to $75. It was actually $81 at one point last month according to the actual exchange rate. If this trend continues, we'll be back with another price reduction.
How nice is this considering most everything else is going up right now.
Our website may take a day or two to get updated. If you order before the changes are posted, we'll make the adjustment for you.
